Merit Badges

General Information:

There are three Merit Badges that we will be working on during Philmont Shakedowns:
  • Hiking
  • Camping
  • Backpacking
You must get a Blue Card from Mr. Young for each Merit Badge.  Fill out your Blue Cards and turn them in to Mr. Radko, who will be your Merit Badge Counselor.  You can work with all of the Crew Advisors on requirements during shakedowns.

Camping and Backpacking have similar requirements, but we recommend you focus on completing Camping first, since it is Eagle required.  You can work on all of the MBs at the same time, but you can only use a given achievement (e.g. camping one night) for a single MB.

Current Activities:

  • Review the online material (follow the link above), and use your Scout handbook to look into requirements 1a, 1b, 2 and 3.  There is a PDF you can download and use
  • Look for and sign-up for the Shakedown hikes, especially the ones labelled "10+ miler", as you will need 5 of them to meet requirement #5.  You will need to writeup a "hike plan" for each of the hikes, and the first will meet requirement #4
  • You will find a worksheet for the hike plan in the PDF workbook, but the basic elements are:
    • Where are you going?  Drop-off, pick-up, and path between.  It is a good idea to include a map.
    • When will you return?  Basic logistics, this is included (at least an estimate) in the Sign-Up Genius
    • Who is hiking with you?
    • Why are you going?  Could be fishing, photography, rock-climbing -- in this case, it is hiking and/or Philmont prep
    • What are you taking?  Three sections here:  general equipment, clothing, and hike menu (food)
Hiking FAQs:
  • What if I don't know the route?
    • Great!  This is a chance to reachout to the hike leader and ask for details.  You can always email the mailing list, or Mr. Radko (john@radkofamily.com)
  • What should I bring for a hike?
  • What about food?
    • You should ALWAYS bring some appropriate snacks.  If there will be a meal (lunch, dinner), it may be done as a crew, or individually -- you should find out (in fact, you need to in order to fill out your Hike Plan)
